Prevent Illiteracy by Reading to Your Child
Literacy is becoming a serious issue in modern America that is largely the result of children not getting the early life attention that prepares them to begin reading at an early age. Reading to your child is a great way to share the books that you grew up reading with your own children.
The situation is made even more tragic because there is a simple solution that can ensure that you raise literate and intelligent children: read to them. By reading to a child, you are showing them that adults value books and the wealth of knowledge that they contain and will pique their curiosity. By reading to your child at bedtime and discussing what you have read with them will inspire a life long love of books that will bring a magic into their lives that only books can create.
An interest in reading isnt the only benefit. Research has also shown that children whose parents read to them are more self confident, more able to express themselves, and given to success throughout their schooling and beyond.
A child craves familiarity, and this will extend to their desires in books. Your own child might want you to read them the same book whenever you have story time. Though repeating stories occasionally is not a bad idea, if you do not introduce some variety to your reading material, the growth of your childs ideas and values may stagnate, as they are not being exposed to new material, and are not forced to think during reading time.
If you vary the books that you read to your children you will inspire them to see and consider new concepts and new ideas, and over time this will foster an inquisitive and accepting nature in them. Introducing new concepts and ideas will slowly help them to overcome an aversion to what is unfamiliar and encourage them to explore literature on their own.
